Son of the sculptor Eduardo Chillida Juántegui, he showed interest in art as a child, and at the age of four he made his first sculpture in terracotta, with the help of his father. He studied briefly at the School of Arts in Deba and at the Círculo de Bellas Artes, where he received classes from Antonio López, and also attended the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid. Although he began in sculpture, he soon began to work in painting as well. After a traumatic motorcycle accident in 1985, Chillida moved to Madrid with his brother Luis, and there he continued painting although he abandoned sculpture. The following year, in 1987, he spent several months in New York, after which he returned to San Sebastian, where in 1988 he held his first solo exhibition at the Dieciséis Gallery. Since then, he has had solo exhibitions in Spain, the United States, Syria and Mexico, with the one held in 2005 at the San Telmo Museum in San Sebastian being especially noteworthy. He has also participated in group exhibitions, and is currently represented in the Artium Museum in Vitoria, the Maeda Collection in Japan, the Cano Collection in Mexico and others, both public and private.
