BANKSY (Bristol, England, 1975).
"Have a nice day", 2003.
Lithograph on paper.
Signed and dated in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 43.5 x 54 cm; 53 x 73 cm (frame).
This lithograph reproduces one of the most incisive icons of Banksy's repertoire, derived from a stencil made in 2002 in Shoreditch, specifically in Old Street, on the back door of Franco's Fish and Chips. The image condenses with remarkable effectiveness the tension between authority and mass visual culture, articulating an ironic critique of social control through the contrast between institutional violence and friendly aesthetics.
Transferred to lithographic format in 2003, the work retains the immediacy of graffiti language, characteristic of the urban art that emerged in cities like London at the end of the 20th century. Banksy, whose identity remains deliberately hidden, has established himself as a key figure in urban art, using the stencil as a quick and reproducible technique that allows him to intervene the public space with politically charged messages. In Have a Nice Day, the use of the pink ribbon is not innocent: its association with the police figure generates a dissonance that challenges the viewer, questioning the normalization of surveillance and violence under the guise of cordiality.
Banksy (active since the 1990s) is an anonymous artist from Bristol, considered one of the most influential figures in urban art. His work, developed mainly through the stencil technique, is characterized by a direct and easily recognizable visual language, with which he addresses issues such as power, war, consumerism or surveillance.Emerging from the British underground scene, Banksy began making illegal interventions in public space, especially in cities like London. Over time, his work transcended the street scene to become part of galleries, auctions and international projects, without abandoning his critical attitude towards the art system. Among his best-known actions is the partial self-destruction of a work during an auction at Sotheby's in 2018, a gesture that reinforced his questioning of the art market.
