MADSAKI (Osaka, 1974)
"Coffee break drawing of Mona Lisa".
Lithograph on paper.
Signed and justified. Copy 16/100.
Measurements: 73 x 51 cm.
This work represents a "graffiti" or doodle-style reinterpretation of Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting, characterized by large black eyes that appear to melt.
Madsaki was born in Osaka but moved to New Jersey at an early age. He graduated from Parsons School of Design in New York (BFA, 1996) as part of the international group of artists Barnstormers before embarking on his solo career. Satirical yet sentimental, aggressive yet vulnerable. He has used graffiti influences as a way to express the frustration and alienation of his bicultural identity while critiquing the value of art.
