Eduardo Arroyo was a key painter, sculptor and engraver of Neofigurativism and a central figure of the new Spanish figuration. After initially training as a journalist, he moved to Paris in 1958, where he developed his artistic career and lived most of his career in exile due to the political situation in Franco's Spain.
In his beginnings, he opted for figurative painting in a context dominated by abstraction, incorporating critical references to Spanish history -such as dictators or traditional iconography- treated with irony and a provocative approach. His work evolved towards an influence of Pop art, consolidating a critical, political and demystifying visual language of the great figures of art and history.
His career was marked by censorship and conflict with the Franco regime, especially after his participation in the 1963 Paris Biennial. However, over time his work was widely recognized both in Spain and internationally, receiving the National Plastic Arts Award in 1982 and being the subject of important exhibitions in institutions such as the Pompidou Center.
