Salvador Dalí (1904-1989)
Son of the notary Salvador Dalí y Cusí, with whom he had a difficult relationship that marked his career, Salvador Dalí attributed part of his unique personality to the fact that he inherited the name of a brother who died before his birth. He trained in Figueres and at the School of Fine Arts in Madrid, from which he was expelled on two occasions. During his time at the Residencia de Estudiantes he came into contact with the nucleus of the future Generation of '27 and became friends with Buñuel, García Lorca and Pepín Bello, while at the same time he became interested in the avant-garde and futurism.
In the mid-twenties he began to exhibit in Barcelona and began to work on stage design. His painting, writings and lectures aroused intense controversy, especially after the Yellow Manifesto of 1928. In 1930 he fully adopted surrealism and formulated his paranoiac-critical method. Already settled in Paris, he became one of the central figures of the surrealist movement and extended his activity to the scenographic field. In 1934 he married Gala, muse and decisive figure in his artistic career and in his public projection.
Between 1940 and 1948 he lived mainly in New York, where he consolidated his international fame thanks to exhibitions, publications and a great media presence. His distancing from the surrealist orthodoxy and his support for Franco's regime since 1939 led to his expulsion from the group by André Breton. After 1948, back in Spain, he oriented his work towards mysticism and the Spanish pictorial and literary tradition.
In his last stage he developed a very diverse activity: scenography, cinema, illustration, engraving, jewelry, sculpture, design and large exhibitions. He designed the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres, inaugurated in 1974, and received important distinctions, such as the Gold Medal of the Generalitat and the title of Marquis of Púbol in 1982. After Gala's death he led a more retired life. The Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation was established in 1984 and, subsequently, museums dedicated to his work were inaugurated in Berlin and St. Petersburg, Florida.
