Colored engraving of cynegetic subject, made from a composition by Carle Vernet and engraving by Philibert-Louis Debucourt, two prominent figures of French art of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century.
The composition responds to the French taste for hunting and riding scenes, a genre in which Vernet achieved great recognition for the elegance of his figures, the precision in the representation of the horse and the narrative character of his scenes. Debucourt, for his part, translates the image into engraving with refinement, preserving the descriptive vividness and decorative appeal of the composition.
The editorial inscription "A Paris chez Rolland, Place des Victoires, No. 6" places the print in the context of the Parisian production and marketing of engravings, intended both for collecting and interior decoration. The work is presented in an Elizabethan mahogany wood frame with zinc marquetry, which reinforces its ornamental character.
