Giorgio de Chirico was an Italian painter, sculptor and writer, considered the founder of metaphysical painting and one of the most influential figures of 20th century art. His work, marked by an enigmatic and melancholic atmosphere, is characterized by empty squares, classical architectures, long shadows and faceless mannequins that evoke a world suspended between dream and reality. Influenced by the philosophy of Nietzsche and Schopenhauer, De Chirico sought to represent a deeper and more mysterious dimension of existence. His compositions had a decisive influence on the emergence of surrealism, inspiring artists such as Salvador Dalí, René Magritte and Max Ernst.
