This poster was created by Miquel Barceló to promote the bullfight featuring José Tomás held on June 12, 2022, at the Coso de la Alameda in Jaén.

The image brings together some of the artist’s most recognizable traits: gestural brushwork, intense color, and a vision of the bull as a telluric, almost mythical presence. Against the yellow background, the bodies of the bullfighter and the animals dissolve into patches, graphic forms, and splatters, blending the energy of the painting with the physical tension of the bullfight.

Miquel Barceló is one of the central figures of contemporary Spanish art. Since the 1980s, he has achieved international recognition with his materially intense paintings, which draw on landscape, bullfighting, the animal world, literature, and his travels through Africa. In 1986, he received the National Prize for Plastic Arts, and in 2003, the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts.

His work is represented in institutions such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the MACBA in Barcelona, the IVAM in Valencia, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the MoMA in New York, the Musée Picasso in Paris, and the Fundació “la Caixa,” among others.
