Based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Koch, the film combines romantic drama, political thriller, and investigative journalism, set in Jakarta in 1965, at the height of the crisis surrounding President Sukarno’s government and the events that led to profound political change in Indonesia. Due to death threats against Mel Gibson and the director, production had to be moved from Manila to Australia for security reasons.
Linda Hunt’s performance was one of the film’s greatest achievements; she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role, making it one of the production’s most notable accolades.
