Hartley, the film tells the story of Leo Colston, a young man who, during a summer in early 20th-century England, becomes a secret go-between for a high-society woman, played by Julie Christie, and a farmer with whom she is having a forbidden affair, played by Alan Bates. Through the protagonist’s memories, the film explores themes such as impossible love, class differences, and the loss of innocence. Also starring Michael Redgrave, *The Go-Between* was a critical success and won the Palme d’Or at the 1971 Cannes Film Festival, as well as the BAFTA Award for Best British Film, establishing itself as one of the most prestigious works by Joseph Losey and in British cinema of the 1970s.
