This silkscreen print exemplifies Eduardo Chillida’s abstract and essential artistic language; it was created in 1975, during the artist’s period of full creative maturity. The work is structured around bold black forms with organic and angular contours, arranged against a white background with a precise balance between mass and void.
The composition addresses one of Chillida’s central concerns: the relationship between form and space, where void acquires a structural value equivalent to that of matter. The figures seem to interlock and engage in a dialogue with one another, generating internal tensions and a sense of restrained rhythm—a hallmark of his graphic and sculptural work.
The absence of a title reinforces the artist’s intention to avoid literal interpretation, inviting a direct perceptual experience. The forms evoke primary, almost architectural structures, in which one can perceive the influence of philosophical thought and the Basque constructive tradition—constant elements throughout his career.
Throughout his life, Chillida received numerous prizes and awards, including the Carnegie Prize, the Rembrandt Prize, the Wolf Foundation Prize for the Arts, and the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts. He was also a member of the San Fernando Academy, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London and of the Imperial Order of Japan, and was awarded the Grand Cross of Humanitarian Merit by the Institution of the same name in Barcelona. In addition to his Chillida-Leku Museum in Hernani, his work is represented in museums and collections around the world, such as the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the MoMA in New York, the Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
