This booklet dedicated to the “Tapís de Tarragona” documents one of the most iconic textile projects from Joan Miró’s mature period, created in collaboration with Josep Royo. The publication, published by Sala Gaspar in 1972, includes texts by Rafael Orozco, Maria Lluïsa Borràs, and Josep Royo alongside illustrations by Miró, making it a particularly significant testament to the expansion of his artistic language into the realm of tapestry, graphic art, and artist’s books.
The compositions included showcase the artist’s essential vocabulary: black symbols imbued with great gestural energy, stars, moons, biomorphic forms, and fields of red, blue, yellow, and green. Miró brings to paper the same artistic freedom that characterizes his monumental works, creating a universe where the cosmic, the earthly, and the playful coexist with absolute naturalness.
Joan Miró was one of the key figures in 20th-century art. His artistic language, closely related to Surrealism yet deeply personal, revitalized painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, and printmaking through a vocabulary of essential signs, colors, and forms. His work is represented in institutions such as the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona, the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró in Mallorca, the Museo Reina Sofía, MoMA in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Tate in London.
