Salvador Dalí (1904–1989)
The son of notary Salvador Dalí y Cusí, with whom he had a difficult relationship that shaped his career, Salvador Dalí attributed part of his unique personality to the fact that he had inherited the name of a brother who had died before his birth. He studied in Figueres and at the School of Fine Arts in Madrid, from which he was expelled twice. During his time at the Residencia de Estudiantes, he came into contact with the core group of the future Generation of ’27 and befriended Buñuel, García Lorca, and Pepín Bello, while also developing an interest in the avant-garde and Futurism.
In the mid-1920s, he began exhibiting in Barcelona and started working on stage design. His paintings, writings, and lectures sparked intense controversy, especially following the 1928 Yellow Manifesto. In 1930, he fully embraced Surrealism and formulated his paranoiac-critical method. Having settled in Paris, he became one of the central figures of the Surrealist movement and expanded his work into the field of set design. In 1934, he married Gala, his muse and a pivotal figure in his artistic career and public image.
Between 1940 and 1948, he lived primarily in New York, where he cemented his international fame through exhibitions, publications, and a strong media presence. His departure from Surrealist orthodoxy and his support for Franco’s regime beginning in 1939 led to his expulsion from the group by André Breton. Upon his return to Spain in 1948, he转向ed his work toward mysticism and the Spanish pictorial and literary traditions.
In his later years, he engaged in a wide range of activities: set design, film, illustration, printmaking, jewelry, sculpture, design, and major exhibitions. He designed the Dalí Theater-Museum in Figueres, which opened in 1974, and received important honors, such as the Gold Medal of the Generalitat and the title of Marquis of Púbol in 1982. After Gala’s death, he led a more secluded life. The Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation was established in 1984, and museums dedicated to his work were subsequently opened in Berlin and St. Petersburg, Florida.
