DESCRIPTION
VICTOR VASARELY (Pécs, Hungary, 1906–Paris, 1997).
“Untitled,” 1993.
Color lithograph on paper.
Signed and inscribed “E.A.” in pencil.
Measurements: 53 × 45 cm.
The composition is organized through a grid of squares and circles subjected to progressive distortion, creating the illusion of a spherical volume that seems to advance toward the viewer. The alternation of blues, reds, greens, and blacks intensifies the effect of depth and movement, even though the image remains constructed on a completely flat surface.
The work is part of the optical research conducted by Vasarely, a key figure in Op Art. Through systematic variations in form, scale, and color, the artist transformed geometry into a dynamic perceptual experience, challenging the stability of vision and the boundary between two-dimensionality and volume.
Victor Vasarely was one of the leading pioneers of optical and kinetic art. His work is characterized by the use of geometric modules and chromatic hallmarks designed to generate vibrations, depth, and the illusion of movement. His work is represented in major international collections, and there are museums dedicated to his work in Aix-en-Provence and Pécs.
