DESCRIPTION
JOAN MIRÓ (Barcelona, 1893–Palma de Mallorca, 1983).
“Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona,” 1976.
Original color lithograph on Guarro paper, print no. 83/99.
Signed and numbered in pencil.
Edition of 99 copies.
Published by the Fundació Joan Miró and printed by La Polígrafa, Barcelona.
Bibliography: Mourlot 1090.
Measurements: 70 × 50 cm.
The lithograph was created to mark the opening of the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona. It is part of the special edition of 99 copies on Guarro paper, signed and numbered, produced prior to the inclusion of the text on the poster; at the same time, a run of 2,000 copies with a printed signature was produced.
The composition brings together the essential features of Miró’s mature style: broad black forms, intense primary colors, and seemingly spontaneous marks against a light background. The hallmarks of boldness in the masses and lightness in the secondary lines create a dynamic image, halfway between abstraction, writing, and imaginary figuration.
Beyond its artistic merit, the work possesses significant historical and institutional value, as it is directly linked to the opening of the museum founded by the artist himself. Its limited edition, the artist’s autograph, and its inclusion in Mourlot’s catalogue raisonné reinforce the piece’s appeal to collectors.
Joan Miró was a key figure in the 20th-century avant-garde, renowned for his unique artistic language based on symbols, organic forms, and essential colors. In 1975, the Fundació Joan Miró opened in Barcelona, created by the artist as a space dedicated to contemporary art and new generations. His work is held in institutions such as the Fundació itself, MoMA, and the Tate.
