DESCRIPTION
CARLOS CRUZ-DIEZ (Caracas, Venezuela, 1923 – Paris, France, 2019).
Untitled, 2008.
Color silkscreen on paper, edition 14/75.
Signed, dated, and numbered in pencil.
Measurements: 41 x 38 cm (image); 70 x 56 cm (frame).
Dated 2008, this silkscreen print belongs to Carlos Cruz-Diez’s period of full artistic maturity, when his explorations of color as an autonomous, unstable phenomenon dependent on perception were fully established. Printmaking occupies a coherent place within his body of work: his professional experience in printing and design proved decisive in developing the juxtaposed and superimposed patterns that articulate much of his visual language.
The precision of silkscreen printing allows for control over the repetition and registration of lines—essential aspects in a work based on chromatic interaction. The image exemplifies Cruz-Diez’s central principle: to liberate color from its descriptive function and present it as a reality that takes shape and transforms during the viewer’s experience.
A key figure in international kinetic and optical art, Cruz-Diez settled permanently in Paris in 1960 and participated in the historic exhibition *The Responsive Eye*, held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1965. His work is represented in the collections of MoMA, the Tate, the Centre Pompidou, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, among other institutions.
