Among the many publishing projects undertaken by Joseph Kosuth, *Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Guide to Contemporary Art* stands as an excellent example of how the artist transforms the book and the text into authentic spaces for creation. Far from conceiving a conventional museum guide, Kosuth offers a critical reflection on the very nature of the museum, the authority of exhibition discourse, and the way language shapes our perception of art. In 2002, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston invited Kosuth as an artist-in-residence to kick off the museum’s centennial celebrations. Instead of producing a standalone piece for a single gallery, the artist decided to engage with the institution as a whole. For several months, he worked in the museum’s archives, studied the correspondence of the founder, Isabella Stewart Gardner, and researched the role of art historian Bernard Berenson. As part of this ambitious project, Kosuth revised the museum’s traditional *Guide to Contemporary Art*. Instead of publishing a conventional catalog, he reworked the guide by incorporating his own interventions, texts, philosophical quotes, photographs, archival documents, and historical materials.
Joseph Kosuth is one of the key figures in Conceptual Art and one of the artists who radically transformed the notion of the artwork in the second half of the 20th century. Trained at the School of Visual Arts in New York and involved in the New York art scene from a very young age, he achieved international recognition in the 1960s. Among his most important exhibitions are those held at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Tate Modern in London, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Brooklyn Museum, the Jüdisches Museum in Berlin, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, as well as his participation in numerous editions of the Venice Biennale and Documenta in Kassel. Considered one of the most influential artists in contemporary art, he has received numerous international awards, and his work is part of the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Tate, the Centre Pompidou, the Stedelijk Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, among other prestigious institutions around the world.
