Jacques Villon is considered one of the great masters of 20th-century printmaking, as he succeeded in applying the principles of Cubism to printmaking, demonstrating that printmaking techniques could achieve the same complexity and richness as painting. He began creating illustrations for Parisian humor magazines, in which he satirized religion and the military, as well as other fundamental aspects of 19th-century conventional morality. Villon exhibited in 1911 at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris, and in 1917 at the first exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists in New York. The artist also created works for the “Société Anonyme” exhibition held at the Brooklyn Museum in 1926, which brought together works by artists of the stature of Picabia and Marcel Duchamp (his brother), among others. He exhibited his work in various galleries across Europe and the United States, notably the Brummer Gallery in New York and the Galerie Louis Carré in Paris and New York.
