DYPLOMISTUS DENTATUS, Eocene
From the Green River Formation, Wyoming (United States).
Measurements: 60 x 40 cm.
Length: 50 cm.
Fossil specimen of Diplomystus dentatus, from the Green River Formation, Wyoming (United States). The specimen has a length of 50 cm and is preserved on a 60 x 40 cm plate, reinforced with a wooden structure of 1.2 cm. The preparation has been professionally done in France.
Diplomystus is an extinct genus of clupeomorph fish, distantly related to modern herring, anchovies and sardines. It lived from the Late Cretaceous to the Middle Eocene and is one of the last representatives of the ancient order Ellimmichthyiformes, a group of fishes now completely extinct.
Diplomystus dentatus fossils are especially appreciated by collectors due to the elegance of its silhouette and the scientific relevance of the genus within the evolution of modern bony fishes.
