In this work, the artist presents a scene with a distinctly theatrical character, as evidenced by the postures adopted by the figures, whose poses are stereotypical, thus representing archetypes corresponding to mythological characters. The painting, set against a lush landscape that opens up on the left to a clear sky, depicts a scene of great intensity. A woman dressed in rich garments attempts to murder a man who lies asleep. On the right side of the canvas, two nude figures can be seen bathing in a lake while observing the scene. It is important to note the placement of these figures within the composition, as they may represent the protagonists of the scene at an earlier moment in the story, thereby creating a narrative pictorial composition—a common device used in both mythological and historical paintings. This work embodies the aesthetic characteristic of the Italian Baroque classical landscape tradition, pioneered by Annibale Carracci and characterized by a rational idealization of nature, always based on the canons of classicism, which dictate orderly, harmonious, and clear compositions that combine the naturalism of the representation with rigorous compositional structure. Thus, we see a clear landscape with depth, a compositional approach already pioneered by Carracci. However, in this work the artist presents a composition that differs from the aforementioned classicism, as he introduces a hazy atmosphere reminiscent of that developed by the Venetian school. Finally, the figures are also heirs to the classical Italian Baroque landscape—small and integrated into the landscape, without detracting from the prominence of the depiction of nature. Formally, the work falls within the realm of academicism and thus follows classical norms, the foremost of which is exceptional technical quality. Thus, the drawing is rigorous and firm, although the composition reveals a taste for the sumptuous, typical of the Venetian school. Academicism is a direct legacy of Classicism, hence the preference for subjects such as the one presented here, drawn from mythology, though captured from a sensual and decorative perspective far removed from the solemnity of ancient classical art. Hence, too, the approach to the subject, which reimagines the mythological figures in an entirely new way. Nevertheless, one can discern an ideal of beauty that does not stem from reality—though the painter’s study of life from nature is undeniable—but rather an idealism grounded in reality through the accumulation of experience; that is, an aesthetic sublimation that reflects a beauty transcending reality.
