BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Spanish school of the XVII century.
"Crucifixion".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 126 x 101 cm; 144 x 119 cm (frame).
Scene of great sense and scenographic and narrative, typically baroque, which shows us the crucifixion of Jesus through a high point of view that allows us to clearly appreciate both what happens in the upper area and the lower part. In the center we see Christ, captured in profile, with his eyes raised to heaven, resigned and silent. Behind him, on a ladder, we see the soldier who dips the sponge in vinegar to give him to drink, helped by a second character holding a basin, and who has his back to us. On both sides of Christ we see the two thieves, the bad thief trying to attract the attention of the soldier who is at the top of the ladder, and the good thief contemplating the figures at his feet, the Three Marys accompanied by St. John. On the opposite side, as a compositional but also moral contraposition, three soldiers dressed in 17th century clothes, accompanied by a dog, play dice with Christ's clothes. Next to them we see a basket with nails and a hammer, which indicates that they are the ones who have nailed Jesus to the cross. Also in this area of the composition we see the tibias and Adam's skull, a common symbolic element in the Crucifixion, which presents Christ as the new Adam.
