This canvas represents the episode of the Translation of the Apostle Santiago, an important iconographic theme in Christian art, especially in Spain and Galicia, which refers to the miraculous transfer of his body from the Holy Land (Jerusalem) to the Roman Gallaecia (present Galicia), where he was finally buried in what is now Santiago de Compostela. Although traditionally the transfer is represented by boat or ship, on this occasion it takes place in a large horse-drawn chariot. The retinue that accompanies the recumbent body is formed by the two faithful disciples of Santiago, Teodoro and Anastasio, as well as by other afflicted characters and a procession of angels. It is a completely narrative and scenographic piece in which the good work of the artist prevails, both in the execution of the characters and the landscape environment in which the scene takes place.
