BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Flemish school; second third of the eighteenth century.
"Virgin desamparados or Allegory of Charity".
Oil on copper.
Measurements: 16 x 13 cm; 25 x 18,5 cm (frame).
The presence of a crowned woman carrying an arrow, which under her mantle welcomes several children, shows the representation of charity as a concept. However, it can also be a representation of the Virgin of the homeless.
Our Lady of the Innocents, Martyrs and Forsaken, canonically crowned in 1921, is located in the Basilica of the Virgin of the Forsaken in the city, and is shown with a characteristic bow, a lily in one hand and the Child Jesus, who carries, in turn, the Cross.
The baroque influence of the 17th century is still evident both in the iconography and in certain details of the work, although it is also possible to perceive the slight change brought about by the arrival of Neoclassicism from the 18th century.
