In this painting, the nineteenth-century author takes up the classic theme of the "Dance of Apollo with the Muses" as it was treated by the late Renaissance painter Giulio Romano. It depicts Apollo, god of music and sunlight, dancing with the nine muses, goddesses of the arts and sciences. The painting, now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, captures the grace and movement of the dance, as well as the beauty and inspiration of the muses. Apollo, as leader of the muses, presides over the composition suggesting harmony and balance between the gods and the arts. Romano's mannerist style, with its elongated figures and dramatic atmosphere, enhances the emotion and vitality of the work. The nine muses, wrapped in draped robes, surround Apollo, dressed in toga, in a harmonious dance. The version shown here respects the synthesis between the classical iconography and the Mannerist prism of the original. Romano, an outstanding disciple of Raphael, is known for his ability to fuse Renaissance harmony with dynamic and theatrical expressiveness.
