DESCRIPTION

Italian school of the XVII century.
"Infant Jesus asleep on the Cross".
Oil on canvas.
Frame of the XIX century.
Measurements: 60 x 74 cm; 77 x 91,5 cm (frame).

We are before a work that, although rooted in the iconographic conventions of the Italian school of the seventeenth century, displays a particular sensitivity and a deep symbolism. The painting presents the foreshortened figure of a sleeping infant, whose body, of exuberant fleshiness and pearly tones, rests in an attitude of innocence and abandonment. The morbidity of her anatomy, typical of the representation of the putto or the Infant Jesus, underlines the vulnerability and purity inherent to childhood. His posture, with one arm raised above his head and his left leg crossed over his right, evokes a sleepy naturalness. He rests on dark wooden elements, whose diagonal arrangement evokes the shape of a cross, a lignum crucis that subtly foreshadows the sacrificial destiny of the Christ Child.

The surrounding landscape has an enigmatic atmosphere, blurred by silver clouds. The delicately detailed foreground vegetation includes small flowers sprouting from the earth, symbols of life and rebirth, even in a context of latent melancholy. A bird with vibrant plumage, possibly a goldfinch or a bird of similar Christian symbolism (associated with the Passion because of its feeding on thistles, which refer to the crown of thorns), perches on a branch. Its presence, along with the dangling dark berries, adds a note of wildlife and a tinge of spiritual portent or accompaniment.

The chromatic palette is characterized by the predominance of earthy and dark tones, which envelop the luminous figure of the Infant, creating a chiaroscuro effect that emphasizes the whiteness and life of the body. The light falls softly, modeling the forms and giving the skin an almost translucent glow.

The fusion of childlike tenderness with the premonitory elements of the Passion endows the painting with a deep emotional and contemplative charge, inviting the viewer to reflect on the transience of innocence and divine sacrifice.

Baroque painters such as Guido Reni in Italy and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo in Spain treated the theme of the Child Jesus asleep on the cross.
