Painting of Spanish school and Baroque period faithfully inspired by "The Holy Family with St. Anne" by Rubens, now preserved in the Museo del Prado. Philip IV (1621-1665) was a great admirer of Rubens and The Holy Family was a significant piece in the royal collection. Rubens composed a domestic scene in which the characters interact with tenderness. The bodies are monumental, but they move away from the sensuality of his mythological themes to the greater plastic restraint demanded by the religious theme. The Child, standing on his mother's knees, smiling, touches Mary's breast with one hand and places the other on her neck. Mary embraces him while holding one of his little feet. Joseph, in the background and in the half-light, looks at the little one with his chin resting on his hand and his eyes shining. Saint Anne embraces mother and child. Mary's dress is bright scarlet and her mantle is deep cobalt blue.
