"Mary Magdalene."
Oil on canvas, oval format.
Measurements: 75 x 56 cm; 89 x 71 cm (frame).
This painting from the end of the XVII century or beginning of the XVIII century, is inscribed within the late baroque style, characterized by its intense emotional charge, the dynamism of the compositions and the luminous dramatism.
The scene represents Mary Magdalene in a moment of ecstasy or mystical rapture. Kneeling, with her gaze lost and her body defeated, she is delicately supported by an archangel, while a second angel stands behind them. In the background, a choir of cherubs appears between golden clouds in a break of glory, a typical baroque resource to symbolize the divine irruption.
On the left side of the background, a twilight landscape of bluish tones opens up, adding depth and reinforcing the contrast between the earthly gloom and the heavenly light. In front of the saint is a rough wooden cross resting on a stone, a direct allusion to her penitence and meditation.
Mary Magdalene wears an ivory-white robe while a honey-colored mantle rests on her lap, matching her loose hair, accentuating her humanity and spiritual purity. The warm, earthy palette, together with the soft modeling of the figures and the effects of chiaroscuro, reveal the influence of Italian and Flemish Baroque religious painting, which was widespread throughout Europe during this period.
In its subject matter, emotional treatment and compositional structure, this work fully reflects the devotional and theatrical spirit of the late Baroque, in which faith is expressed through sentiment, sensuality and transcendent light.
