BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Italian or Flemish school; early seventeenth century.
"Virgin of silence".
Oil on copper.
Measurements: 23 x 18 cm; 32 x 27 cm (frame).
In this painting the artist shows us a scene of warm and intimate character, however, does not abandon the thematic complexity, as it addresses several religious themes simultaneously. The position of the Virgin and Child allude to the iconography of the Virgin of Silence, but the presence of St. John in the background refers to the Holy Family, although it is worth mentioning that the child holds his index finger to his lips indicating to the viewer that he should keep silent. In addition, in the upper area two angels hold a large crown, so it is also the coronation of the Virgin as Queen of Heaven. The artist dispenses with a specific background and fills the work with an orange tonality that enhances the monumentality of the figures and brings luminosity to the scene, especially in contrast with the Virgin's mantle.
The work is reminiscent of the work of Angelino Modoro in composition to the painting of the Holy Family with St. John and Dominican that belongs to the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Seville.Angelino Medoro was an Italian painter of the seventeenth century, active in Latin America. His work in the Viceroyalty of Peru greatly influenced the artistic movement of the Cuzco school. It is believed that Medoro studied art in Rome, then traveled to Seville and the New Kingdom of Granada (present-day Colombia). His only surviving work of European art was the painting "Flagellation of Christ" (1586) in Seville. Medoro, along with Bernardo Bitti and Matteo da Lecce (or Matteo Pérez de Alesio in Spanish) were the three founders of Peruvian colonial painting.
