This painting by David Teniers the Younger opens as an apparently humble, almost anecdotal scene, but soon reveals the extraordinary pictorial intelligence of one of the great masters of the genre in 17th century Europe. The composition immediately evokes the work in the Rijksmuseum entitled "Men playing dice in a tavern", since both share practically the same composition, organized around a small group of men gathered around a low table. Far from being a mechanical repetition, this compositional closeness reveals Teniers' working method, based on the constant reformulation of successful schemes, refining gestures, attitudes and atmospheres to explore different narrative intensities within the same motif.
Executed in oil on oak panel, "Drinkers" is located at a key moment in the artist's career, when he had fully assimilated the influence of Adriaen Brouwer and began to transform it into a more serene and legible language of his own. The brushstroke, loose but controlled, builds firm volumes without losing freshness, and the palette of ochers, browns and earths, sprinkled with luminous touches on faces and hands, envelops the scene in a warm and dense atmosphere. The light, low and lateral, does not dramatize, but accompanies the daily action, underlining the physical and psychological closeness between the characters.
The iconography revolves around one of Teniers' favorite themes: male sociability in the tavern, with drinking and gambling as the axis of human interaction. As in the work in the Rijksmuseum, there is a clear disparity between the protagonists, both in age and social status, visible in the difference in clothing and attitudes. This tension is not resolved in a moralizing key; on the contrary, Teniers observes the game as a shared experience, governed by chance and fortune.
The relationship with Brouwer's model, especially with the tavern scene preserved in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, is evident in the arrangement of the main group and in the figure of the concentrated gambler, a recurring motif in Teniers. However, as opposed to Brouwer's harsher pathos, "Drinkers" offers a more balanced and narrative reading. Comparison with the Rijksmuseum painting reinforces this idea: although the compositions are almost identical, the variations in physiognomies, costumes and background, as well as a somewhat more direct execution, allow us to place this work around 1640, slightly earlier or parallel to that one, and close in spirit to other tavern scenes by the artist of the 1640s.
