This painting ascribed to the school of Luca Cambiaso and made in the late sixteenth century, clearly reflects the pictorial language developed in the environment of the Genoese master during his mature stage and its projection in the Hispanic area. Following the model conserved in the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias, the composition responds to a sober and effective structure, conceived to transmit the evangelical episode with spiritual intensity and narrative clarity.
The pictorial quality can be appreciated in the geometric construction of the figures, a characteristic feature of Cambiaso and his circle, where the bodies are simplified in essential volumes that reinforce the compositional solidity. The scene is organized through a balance between the foreground, dominated by the figure of Christ in prayer, and the background, where the sleeping apostles are integrated into a nocturnal landscape of contained atmosphere. The light, concentrated on Christ's body and the angel's appearance, acts as a theological and compositional element, guiding the viewer's visual reading.
In contrast to the naturalistic dramatism that would dominate later Baroque painting, this work is still situated in a late mannerism, where emotion is expressed through posture, the rhythm of the lines and the internal tension of the figures, rather than through exacerbated gestures. This significant difference is reflected in the expressive restraint and stylization of the anatomies, which seek to elevate the scene to a meditative and spiritual plane.
Overall, the painting is a representative example of the diffusion of Luca Cambiaso's style, especially appreciated in the Spanish context of the late 16th century, where his clear, austere and deeply devotional language found fertile ground. It is a work that combines compositional rigor, religious intensity and noble simplicity, qualities that make it a piece of notable historical and aesthetic interest within the religious painting of the late Renaissance.
