DESCRIPTION
PEDRO ONOFRE COTTO FERRER (Palma de Mallorca,1669 - Madrid,1713).
"The adoration of the shepherds".
Oil under glass.
Measurements: 30 x 34 cm; 40 x 43 cm (frame).
This architectural caprice is inscribed in a very appreciated series of Pedro Onofre Cotto Ferrer in which the painter combines great scenes of classic architecture in ruins with biblical episodes of small format. The work is closely related to another known composition by the artist, close in approach to The Visitation, but where the central motif is the Adoration of the shepherds to the Child, also resolved as an intimate scene integrated into a vast architectural landscape. In both cases, the religious narration is subordinated to the visual spectacle of the perspectives, the porticoes and the atmospheric effects, one of the most attractive hallmarks of his production.
Pedro Onofre Cotto Ferrer, trained in the family environment and heir to the tradition of feigned architectures cultivated by his father, achieved notoriety as a specialist in Baroque landscapes with imaginary ruins, populated by tiny and scarce figures. His compositions stand out for their spatial complexity, bold diagonals and scenographic elegance, with clear influences of Claudio de Lorena and Valencian painting, visible in the harmony between architecture, nature and narrative.
After working as a painter at the University of Mallorca, Cotto moved to Madrid at the end of the 17th century, consolidating a reputation that soon transcended the islands. Works signed and dated around 1694-1695, both religious and mythological themes, allow us to clearly establish his style, now recognized in historical and private collections. He also excelled in painting on glass, a technique especially valued in his time, of which documentary references and several religious compositions of an architectural nature are preserved.
This type of work perfectly summarizes the artistic appeal of Pedro Onofre Cotto: refined paintings, of great visual effect, that combine devotion, classical erudition and architectural fantasy, and that place him as a singular figure within the Spanish Baroque landscape of the late 17th century.
