BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Spanish School; XVII century.
"St. Anthony of Padua preaching to the fish".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Measurements: 147 x 123 cm; 156 x 132 cm (frame).
The composition shows St. Anthony of Padua in the miraculous episode of preaching to the fish, narrated by the hagiographic tradition as a response to the indifference of men to his word. The saint appears in the foreground, monumental and serene, set against a broad, atmospheric landscape that opens out to the sea, where the fish emerge in an orderly fashion to listen to the sermon.
From the stylistic point of view, the work reveals a synthesis between naturalism and idealization. The figure of the saint is constructed with a firm drawing and a solid volumetry, reinforced by the Franciscan habit of dark tones, treated with wide and heavy folds that confer gravity and physical presence. The chromatism is sober and restrained, dominated by ochers, greens and muted blues, in keeping with the austere aesthetics of the Spanish school of the sixteenth century. The light, soft but directional, models the face and hands of the saint, emphasizing his eloquent gesture and his expression of mystical recollection.
The pictorial quality is especially appreciated in the compositional balance and in the visual hierarchy: Saint Anthony acts as the central and spiritual axis of the scene, while the secondary characters, the men who withdraw to the background and the fish that listen attentively, reinforce the narrative sense without competing with the main figure. The landscape, delicately rendered and with an aerial perspective, contributes to create a plausible and contemplative space, moving away from mere decorativism.
The work shares stylistic traits with 17th century Spanish painters who were attentive to devotional naturalism, such as narrative clarity, restrained emotionality and the dignification of the saint through a physical presence close to the viewer. This visual language sought to foster spiritual identification and pious contemplation, central objectives of the sacred art of the period.
The Spanish School of the 17th century, one of the moments of greatest splendor of peninsular art. The painters of this period, active in centers such as Seville, Madrid and Valencia, developed a style marked by realism, spiritual intensity and the expressive use of light. Influenced by Tenebrist naturalism and by the iconographic guidelines of the Church, these artists contributed decisively to the configuration of their own pictorial language, of great emotional impact and deep imprint on the Western artistic tradition.
