San Jerónimo penitent is presented in this painting according to an iconography fully established in the devotional tradition of the Renaissance. The saint appears as an old man of marked anatomy and introspective expression, wrapped in a red cloak of intense symbolic charge, isolated in a wild landscape that reinforces the idea of spiritual retreat. The composition is articulated around the figure, monumental and close, which concentrates the viewer's attention through a studied contrast of light between the dark background and the pale flesh of the saint.
From the stylistic point of view, the work is clearly inscribed in the pictorial language developed in Willem Key's circle, characterized by the synthesis between Flemish detail and a more classical conception of the human figure, heir to Italian models. The treatment of the face, furrowed by wrinkles and modeled through smooth tonal transitions, reveals a marked interest in psychological truth and naturalism, constant features in the production associated with the master. The anatomy of the arms, solid and plausible, denotes a precise knowledge of the human body, probably derived from the study of the nude and the assimilation of Italian engravings spread in the Netherlands during the sixteenth century.
The pictorial quality is especially evident in the handling of matter and color: the deep, saturated red of the cloak contrasts with the earthy tones of the landscape and the more muted palette of the background, creating an atmosphere of recollection. The landscape, although secondary, is not merely decorative: its abrupt and somber character dialogues with the penitential attitude of the saint and reinforces the spiritual content of the scene. The presence of the open book and the penitential staff or cross completes an iconographic program intended to underline the dual nature of Saint Jerome as sage and ascetic. The iconography of the saint, very widespread in Renaissance Europe, finds here a sober and concentrated formulation, far from narrative excess.
This restraint is consistent with the stylistic features of Willem Key's environment, where compositional clarity, expressive intensity and monumental dignity of the figures prevail over anecdote.
Willem Key (Breda, 1516 - Antwerp, 1568) was one of the most outstanding painters of the late Flemish Renaissance. Probably trained in Antwerp and in contact with the Italian tradition, he developed a style characterized by psychological portraiture, formal solidity and a marked attention to naturalism. Although today he is especially known for his portraits, his influence also extended to religious painting, where he introduced a greater monumentality and restrained expressiveness.
