DESCRIPTION
Circle of CASPAR NETSCHER (Heidelberg, Germany, 1639-The Hague, Holland, 1684).
"Flora and Zephyr. Allegory of wind and love."
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 74 x 92 cm; 86 x 104 cm (frame).
This painting, attributed to the circle of Caspar Netscher, represents a refined allegory of Flora and Zephyr, personifications of the spring, the love and the fertilizing wind, habitual subjects in the baroque painting of mythological inspiration. The scene takes place in an idealized landscape, where the female figure, elegantly reclining and richly dressed, embodies Flora, goddess of flowers, while the winged young man approaching carrying a bouquet symbolizes Zephyrus, the gentle wind of spring.
The composition stands out for its chromatic delicacy and technical meticulousness, characteristic features of Netscher's environment, known for his cabinet painting, his taste for sumptuous fabrics and the careful representation of the qualities.
The work is part of the late Dutch Baroque, where mythology serves as a pretext to explore ideals of beauty, restrained sensuality and narrative harmony. Beyond its allegorical content, the canvas conveys an atmosphere of serenity and gallantry, typical of an art intended for a refined public, and faithfully reflects Caspar Netscher's cultivated aesthetic language.
The work of Caspar Netscher, trained in the circle of Gerard ter Borch, was highly appreciated by the European aristocracy and exerted a notable influence on the painters of his circle and followers.
