The theme, of deep medieval roots and revitalized by the counter-reformist piety, found in the Andean world a fertile ground for its resignification. In eighteenth-century Cuzco, a leading artistic center, the production of devotional images responded to both ecclesiastical commissions and private demand, favoring the diffusion of iconographies with a strong emotional impact. The Santa Faz, by dispensing with narration to concentrate on the hieratic frontality of Christ's face, enhances its contemplative function: it is not a question of representing an episode, but of offering a presence.
From the stylistic point of view, the piece reflects the characteristic features of the school: emphasis on symmetry and a tendency to stylization that gives the whole an almost iconic quality.
