DESCRIPTION
Italian school; XVIII-XIX centuries.
"Saint Justina of Padua".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 57 x 44 cm; 68 x 55 cm (frame).
This painting represents Saint Justina of Padua, a young Christian martyr venerated especially in the city of Padua. The saint appears portrayed of half body, with a serene and contemplative expression, holding a palm, traditional symbol of the martyrdom, and a book, allusion to her faith and spiritual wisdom. Next to her is a crown, an element that refers both to her noble origin according to hagiographic tradition and to the spiritual victory achieved through sacrifice.
The work presents a balanced composition and soft lighting that highlights the face and hands of the saint. The warm palette, dominated by ochers, reds and golds, together with the delicate treatment of the fabrics and the devotional attitude of the figure, place the painting within the tradition of Italian religious painting intended for private contemplation or small oratories.
