DESCRIPTION

Circle of LUCA GIORDANO (Naples, 1634 - 1705): Naples, c. 1700.
"David showing Solomon the plans of the Temple".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Measurements: 58 x 82 cm; 70 x 94 cm (frame).
The present work follows the compositional and conceptual model spread by Luca Giordano, one of the greatest exponents of the late Neapolitan Baroque, whose painting is characterized by narrative eloquence, chromatic richness and an extraordinary compositional fluidity. The episode depicted, the delivery by King David to his son Solomon of the plans of the Temple of Jerusalem, comes from the Old Testament account (1 Chronicles 28) and carries a deep symbolic charge both religious and political.
The scene depicts the moment when David, already an old man and clothed with royal attributes, transmits to Solomon not only an architectural project, but the materialization of a divine design. According to biblical tradition, David could not build the Temple because he was a man of war; the construction of the sanctuary was reserved for his son, chosen by God to inaugurate a reign of peace. The painting thus reflects a moment of succession legitimized by heavenly mandate, where the transfer of the plans is equivalent to the transmission of wisdom, power and the sacred alliance between God and the Davidic dynasty.
From the formal point of view, the composition is organized around a dynamic axis that articulates the eloquent gesture of David, pointing out or deploying the plans and the receptive attitude of Solomon, whose youth contrasts with the old age of the monarch. This gestural dialogue concentrates the dramatic tension and endows the scene with a typically baroque theatricality. The golden lighting models the figures through vibrant hallmarks and creates a solemn atmosphere, underlining the providential character of the event. The clothes, treated with wide folds and rich chromatic shades, reinforce the ceremonial dimension of the act.
In the Baroque tradition, this theme acquired contemporary resonances, as it could be interpreted as an allegory of the transmission of power and the continuity of the political order under divine tutelage. In keeping with Giordano's language, the scene combines biblical erudition, monarchical exaltation and scenic spectacularity, offering a visual synthesis where sacred history and rhetoric of power converge in an image of intense symbolic force.
