BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Spanish school; late 19th century.
"Instauration of the Eucharist".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 87 x 130 cm; 101 x 147 cm (frame).
This painting, attributed to the Spanish school of the late nineteenth century, represents the institution of the Eucharist, a central theme of Christianity that refers to the Last Supper. The work shows Christ in the solemn moment of the consecration, holding the bread while blessing, flanked by two disciples who react with recollection and devotion. From the compositional point of view, the scene is organized in a balanced and frontal manner. Christ occupies the central axis, highlighted not only by his position but also by the luminous halo that emphasizes his divine nature. The verticality of the background, a sort of panel or architectural structure, reinforces his role as a mediating figure between the earthly and the heavenly. On both sides, the apostles adopt expressive gestures: one holds his hand to his chest, as a sign of faith or amazement, while the other joins his hands together in an attitude of prayer.
The style clearly reflects the academic tendencies of 19th century Spanish painting, with careful drawing, idealized anatomies and a soft use of chiaroscuro. The colors are warm and harmonious, with a predominance of ochers, greens and reds, which contribute to a serene and contemplative atmosphere. The lighting is uniform, without great dramatic hallmarks, which accentuates the didactic and devotional character of the work.
