"Portrait of Queen Marie Leszczyńska".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 80 x 65 cm; 96 x 80 cm (frame).
Following the codes of the courtly portrait typical of the reign of Louis XV, this work is directly inspired by the model set by Jean-Baptiste van Loo, whose effigy of the sovereign, preserved in the Historical Museum of Strasbourg, established a widely spread iconographic prototype. However, the version considered here introduces a significant variation by replacing the original landscape background with a neutral background, which intensifies the visual concentration on the figure. The depicted is Marie Leszczyńska (1703-1768), wife of Louis XV, whose public image was associated with virtues of piety, discretion and dynastic stability. The portrait shows her according to the model of softened apparatus characteristic of French taste: a half-length or long-bust figure, elegantly arranged, with a slight twist that brings naturalness without breaking the solemnity. The attire, rich in silks, lace and embroidery, is treated with meticulous attention to detail, evidencing the material refinement characteristic of the rococo style.
From the formal point of view, the work presents a polished brushstroke and delicate modeling, with soft lighting that enhances the facial features and gives the figure a serene and restrained presence. The suppression of the landscape, usual in Van Loo's original as an element of prestige and spatial openness, produces here a more intimate and concentrated effect, reinforcing the representative character of the portrait without narrative distractions. This resource brings the work closer to a more sober sensibility within the rococo language. Overall, the portrait reflects the political and symbolic function of the royal image in 18th century France, articulating an idealized representation of the female monarchy. At the same time, it is evidence of the diffusion of official models and their adaptation to different contexts, maintaining a balance between courtly elegance and propagandistic effectiveness.
