BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Italian school; first third of the eighteenth century.
"Portrait of a lady".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 70 x 60 cm; 93 x 82 cm (frame).
Probably conceived in a courtly or urban environment, the canvas responds to the social function of the portrait as an instrument of identity affirmation and representation of status. The female figure is depicted bust-length or half-length, with an elegant and controlled disposition, characterized by a slight twist that adds dynamism without losing the dignity inherent to the genre. The clothing, rich in fabrics, lace and ornaments, is one of the main focuses of attention, not only as a demonstration of rank, but also as a vehicle for the painter's technical virtuosity. In this sense, the Italian school of the period is distinguished by its sensitivity to color, texture and lighting effects, inherited from the great Venetian tradition.
The treatment of light, soft and enveloping, models the volumes with delicacy, highlighting the face and hands as expressive centers. The brushstroke, more fluid than in the full Baroque, points towards a progressive formal liberation, while the background, generally neutral or barely suggested, contributes to concentrate the attention on the figure. These characteristics reflect an evolution towards a more refined and intimate aesthetic, in keeping with the new sensibilities of the 18th century.
This work exemplifies the singularities of the Italian school in this period: the balance between tradition and renewal, the importance of portraiture as a means of social representation, and the search for an idealized but plausible beauty. This Portrait not only documents the image of a woman of her time, but embodies the aesthetic and cultural values of eighteenth-century Italy at a time of change.
