DESCRIPTION
Dutch Caravaggist school, 17th century.
"Gentleman with lute".
Oil on panel.
Measurements: 42.5 × 39.5 cm; 52 × 49 cm (frame).
Attractive genre scene depicting a gallant musician playing the lute, a characteristic theme of the Caravaggist naturalism widespread in Europe during the first half of the seventeenth century. The work is part of the production of the so-called caravaggisti, artists who incorporated into their language the strong hallmarks of light and shadow, the physical closeness of the figures and the taste for scenes of everyday life.
The composition, centered on a bust in the foreground on a dark background, shows a clear assimilation of Italian-rooted tenebrism, with a marked luminous effect that models the face and hands, as well as a notable attention to the details of clothing and the musical instrument. The expressive attitude of the character, almost theatrical in character, reinforces the immediacy of the scene and its vocation of proximity to the spectator.
From a stylistic point of view, the work shows affinities with the production of Caravaggist painters active in Northern Europe and Italy around 1620-1640, and parallels can be drawn with artists such as Hendrick ter Brugghen, Dirck van Baburen or Gerard van Honthorst in the Dutch field, as well as with Theodor Rombouts or Bartolomeo Manfredi in the Italian and Flemish context.
