The pictorial production of the Greek school in the 18th century was in a moment of transition, in which the post-Byzantine traditions survived with strength while incorporating, in a progressive way, western influences. In this context, the heritage of Orthodox iconography continued to be the backbone of artistic creation, especially in the religious field. However, during this century there was a growing openness to models from Italy, particularly Venetian painting, favored by commercial and cultural contacts in territories such as the Ionian Islands. This permeability translates into a greater interest in volume, perspective and a richer chromatism, which softens the rigidity inherited from the Byzantine language without abandoning it completely.
The result is a hybrid language, where the devotional function of the image remains intact, but is enriched by more naturalistic formal resources. Thus, the Greek school of the 18th century should not be understood as a closed system, but as a space of synthesis between tradition and innovation, a reflection of a culture in constant dialogue between East and West.
