Dutch school of the XVII century.
"Pastoral scene".
Oil on oak panel.
Measurements: 22 x 28 cm, 38 x 44 cm (frame).
The work, ascribed to the Dutch school of the seventeenth century, represents a pastoral landscape in which the human figure appears harmoniously integrated into nature. In the foreground, several shepherds lead cattle, sheep and dogs along a path along a river or lake, while one of them, mounted on horseback and carrying a spear, guides the movement. The scene opens onto a wide valley dominated by a mountain in the background, under a wide sky with clouds illuminated by a warm light, probably dawn or dusk.
The composition is structured in successive planes that generate depth: the foreground with the figures and livestock, a middle plane with the watercourse and scattered buildings, and a background dominated by the mountain mass. The golden light unifies the scene and creates a serene atmosphere, highlighting the volumes of the landscape and softening the contours. The palette, based on warm, earthy tones, contributes to the sense of balance and stillness. Although the figures are treated in some detail, their main function is to animate the landscape and guide the viewer's gaze.
This type of representation is linked to the Dutch landscape tradition of the 17th century, in which artists such as Aelbert Cuyp or Nicolaes Berchem developed pastoral scenes with Italianate influences. These works combine the observation of nature with an idealization of the landscape, creating harmonious and luminous visions that evoke a peaceful rural life.
The historical context corresponds to the Dutch Golden Age, a period of great economic prosperity and cultural development in the United Provinces. At this time, landscape painting established itself as an autonomous genre, much in demand by an urban bourgeoisie that valued both the representation of its surroundings and idealized visions of nature. These images not only decorated domestic interiors, but also reflected a new relationship with the landscape, understood as a space of contemplation, identity and aesthetic enjoyment.
