Antwerp School of the XVII century.
"The Elevation of the Cross".
Oil on copper.
Measurements: 16 x 22 cm, 35 x 41,5 cm (frame).
The work represents the episode of the Crucifixion of Christ, specifically the moment before the elevation of the cross, when Jesus is being nailed by the executioners. In the center of the composition, the body of Christ appears stretched out on the ground, with open arms, while several men perform the action with energetic gestures. The scene takes place in an open landscape, where the presence of soldiers, some armed and one on horseback, reinforces the violent and public character of the event. The instruments of the Passion, visible in the foreground, underline the drama of the moment.
The composition is dynamic and concentrated on the main action, with the figures grouped around the body of Christ. The light highlights the pale body of the protagonist, creating a strong contrast with the darker and warmer tones of the environment and the surrounding characters. The loose brushstrokes and the palette dominated by ochre, reddish and earth tones contribute to an intense and dramatic atmosphere, typical of scenes of martyrdom. The background landscape, more schematic, serves as a frame for the action without detracting from its prominence.
From the stylistic point of view, the work can be placed in the tradition of baroque painting, where the interest in movement, emotion and theatricality occupies a central place. This type of composition finds parallels in artists such as Peter Paul Rubens, whose work had a great influence on the representation of religious scenes charged with dynamism and expressiveness.
The historical context corresponds to 17th century Europe, at a time when religious painting played a fundamental role within the framework of the Counter-Reformation. In this context, images of the Passion of Christ were conceived as instruments of devotion and persuasion, intended to move the viewer and reinforce faith through a direct and emotional representation of suffering. Thus, the work not only narrates a biblical episode, but seeks to provoke an intense spiritual response through the visual and dramatic force of the scene.
