BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Flemish School of the XVI century.
"Lamentation over the dead Christ".
Oil on panel with carved and gilded wood architecture.
Measurements: 19 x 15 cm, 40 x 23 cm (with architecture).

The work, ascribed to the Flemish school of the sixteenth century, represents the moment after the Descent from the Cross, when the Virgin Mary holds the lifeless body of Christ. The composition focuses on the intense emotional relationship between the two figures: Christ appears lying, with his anatomy carefully modeled and marked by the wounds of the Passion, while the Virgin, in an attitude of contained pain, bows her head in a gesture of recollection. In the background, the cross and the open landscape place the episode in its narrative context and add depth to the scene.

The structure is sober and intimate, with few figures, which reinforces the devotional character of the image. The soft light allows us to appreciate the volumes and folds of the fabrics, while the palette of dark and earthy tones contributes to an atmosphere of recollection. The detail in the faces, the treatment of the canvases and the landscape reflect the naturalism characteristic of Flemish painting.

This work is inscribed in the context of the Flemish primitives of the 15th century, in the orbit of artists such as Rogier van der Weyden, Jan van Eyck or Gerard David, who developed a meticulous and emotionally charged painting. In a prosperous and deeply religious Flanders, such images had a clear devotional function: to encourage meditation and the identification of the faithful with the suffering of Christ, in line with spiritual currents such as devotio moderna, which promoted a more intimate relationship with the sacred.
