Attributed to FRANS FRANCKEN II, The Younger (Antwerp, 1581 - 1642).
"The Meeting of Abraham and Melchizedek".
Oil on panel.
Measurements: 38 x 34 cm, 50 x 45,50 cm (frame). (frame).
The work, attributed to Frans Francken the Younger, represents the biblical episode of the encounter between Abraham and Melchizedek, narrated in Genesis. The scene shows the moment when Melchizedek, king and priest, offers bread and wine to Abraham after his victory, a gesture charged with symbolic meaning as a prefiguration of the Eucharist in the Christian tradition. In the foreground, both figures are at the center of the action: Abraham, accompanied by his entourage, receives the offering, while Melchizedek, richly attired, performs the act with solemnity. The presence of soldiers with spears and armor reinforces the historical and heroic character of the episode, alluding to the recent conflict.
The composition responds to a characteristic scheme of Flemish Baroque painting: the main figures are grouped in the foreground, treated in great detail, while the landscape opens in depth towards a luminous background. The warm palette, dominated by ochers, reds and golds, unifies the scene and accentuates its theatrical dimension. The care in the representation of fabrics, armor and liturgical objects stands out, as well as the balance between the narrative action and the natural environment, which provides a scenographic framework for the event.
Frans Francken was one of the leading painters of the Antwerp school in the 17th century, specializing in biblical, historical and allegorical scenes in small format. His style is characterized by meticulous detail, rich color and the construction of compositions dense in figures and meaning. In his work, the visual narrative acquires great importance, allowing him to represent complex episodes in a clear and accessible way.
We can compare this work with another of the same subject and model preserved in the Museo del Prado, an oil on copper, with reference P002738 from Pedro Fernández Durán y Bernaldo de Quirós in 1931.
The historical context corresponds to the Spanish Netherlands at the height of the Baroque period, a period marked by artistic dynamism and the strong influence of the Counter-Reformation. In this context, religious painting played a didactic and devotional role, aimed at reinforcing the values of the Catholic faith. The choice of the theme of Abraham and Melchizedek is not accidental, as it allowed a typological reading to be established between the Old and New Testaments, underlining the legitimacy of the sacraments and the continuity of the Christian tradition.
Overall, the work synthesizes the essential features of Flemish Baroque: visual richness, narrative clarity and symbolic depth, offering an elaborate representation of a key biblical episode in Christian theology.
