BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Castilian school of the 15th century.
"The lamentation of the dead Christ".
Oil on panel with gilded architecture.
Cradled.
Measurements: 82 x 55 cm, 111 x 84 cm (with architecture).

The work represents the scene of the Lamentation over the dead Christ, a moment after the Descent from the Cross, in which the body of Christ, already lifeless, is held and mourned by the Virgin and a group of sacred figures. In the center of the composition, the naked body of Christ appears arranged diagonally, with visible wounds, while the Virgin Mary, with a contained and sorrowful face, holds him with delicacy. Around her are St. John the Evangelist, Mary Magdalene and other holy women, forming a compact group that emphasizes the dramatic and devotional character of the scene.

The composition is organized in a shallow space, with the figures arranged in the foreground, cut out against a landscape that opens up in the background, where architectural and natural elements can be appreciated, treated with meticulous attention to detail. The figures have stylized features, with elongated faces, expressive gestures and a marked linearity in the drawing, characteristics of late Gothic. The polychromy is rich and contrasting, with a predominance of reds, greens and golds, which reinforce the emotional intensity and symbolic character of the scene.

The whole is integrated into a richly carved and gilded architectural frame, ornamental in character, which acts as a visual prolongation of the painting and underlines its devotional function. This type of presentation suggests that the work was intended for a religious context, possibly an altarpiece or an oratory.

Inscribed within the Castilian school of the 15th century, the work reflects the characteristics of Hispano-Flemish painting, where Flemish influences are combined in the detail, the treatment of the landscape and the attention to secondary elements, with a local tradition of strong spiritual content. In this context, the image not only narrates an episode of the Passion, but also seeks to provoke the viewer's empathy, inviting him to contemplate Christ's suffering.

Thus, the painting is situated within an artistic production in which expressiveness, symbolism and devotional function prevail over naturalistic representation, constituting a representative example of the religious and aesthetic sensibility of 15th century Castile.
