DESCRIPTION
Spanish or viceroyalty school, XVII century
"Christ and the adulterous woman".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Provenance: Collection Dukes of Montpensier - Valdeterrazo.
Measurements: 91 x 140 x 2 cm.
Representation of baroque school of the evangelical passage of Christ and the adulterous woman (John 8:1-11), one of the most widespread episodes in baroque painting for its moral charge and its narrative potential. The scene depicts the moment when Christ, surrounded by scribes and Pharisees, intercedes for the accused woman, introducing the famous message of clemency.
The work is articulated by means of a horizontal composition of great development, in which the figures are arranged in an architectural space that provides depth and structure to the scene. Christ occupies a slightly displaced central position, becoming the compositional axis and focus of attention, while the gesture of the kneeling woman in the foreground reinforces the dramatic character of the episode.
The painting shows traits typical of the Hispanic or viceroyal sphere of the 17th century, with a marked influence of late Mannerism in the elongation of the figures and in certain compositional resources, combined with an incipient naturalism in the faces and gestures. The palette, dominated by warm tones and moderate hallmarks of light, contributes to the narrative clarity of the scene.
The provenance of the collection of the Dukes of Montpensier provides an additional element of historical interest, linking the work to a context of aristocratic collecting.
