Set of small devotional scenes that represent different episodes of the life of Christ, inscribed in the tradition of the Flemish cabinet painting of the XVII century. Painted on copper, a support that allows a precise and detailed execution, the compositions stand out for their meticulousness and chromatic richness.
The scenes present a complex narrative, with dense groupings of figures arranged in architectural and landscape settings that organize the action on different planes. The theatricality of the compositions, the dynamism of the characters and the variety of physiognomic types refer to the language developed by Frans Francken II The Younger, a key figure of the Antwerp school.
Special care is taken in the description of clothing, gestures and secondary elements, as well as a palette dominated by warm tones, enlivened with accents of color. The lighting, with moderate hallmarks, contributes to reinforce the dramatic character without losing narrative clarity.
The homogeneous quality of the whole and certain simplifications in the treatment of some figures suggest an execution within the master's workshop, following models widely spread in his environment. This type of series, intended both for private devotion and for collecting, enjoyed great popularity at the time.
As a whole, this is an attractive group of paintings representative of the Flemish school of the 17th century, which combines iconographic interest, historical value and remarkable decorative strength.
