Circle of LUCA GIORDANO (Naples, 1634 - 1705).
"Magdalene Penitent."
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Measurements: 112 x 92 cm; 129 x 109 cm (frame).
The work is clearly inscribed in the Neapolitan Baroque, direct heir of the intense naturalistic imprint of Caravaggio and its diffusion in the south of Italy. In this canvas, the figure of Mary Magdalene emerges from a somber background through a dramatic light treatment that emphasizes the contrast between light and darkness, a tenebrism that not only models the body volume, but also articulates the spiritual discourse of the image. The lighting directed towards the face and torso establishes an emotional focus that leads the viewer's gaze towards the expression of longing and inner recollection.
Stylistically, the work reflects the ductility and rapidity of execution characteristic of the circle of Luca Giordano, whose painting was distinguished by a loose brushstroke, dynamic composition and vibrant use of color, even within a relatively restrained range. Here, however, chromaticism is subjected to the devotional function: earthy tones, muted greens and warm flesh tones form an introspective atmosphere, in keeping with the penitential theme. The quality of the Neapolitan school is manifested in the ability to combine naturalism and theatricality. The body of the saint, treated with remarkable anatomical sensitivity, is presented as a vehicle of spiritual emotion rather than as a classical ideal. The iconographic attributes reinforce the message of vanitas and redemption, recurring elements in the iconography of the Baroque Magdalene.
